EDUCATION ON HOLD: How Poverty Is Stealing Nigerian...

原文原文 / Original Text
At a busy roadside in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), 17-year-old Ismaila Abdulahi moves from one vehicle to another, holding out his goods to motorists and pedestrians.

For him, school is not a place he remembers leaving. It is a place he has never known.

“I have never stepped into the walls of a classroom,” Ismaila told Daily Trust. “I came from Kano to Abuja at the age of 11 and I am still on the street hawking and surviving.”

His story is one of thousands playing out daily across Nigeria, where children who should be learning in classrooms are instead seen hawking sachet water, food, household items and other goods, working as domestic helpers, assisting their parents in markets or engaging in other forms of labour.

Some are barely old enough to understand what the future means.
