The union said its decision was prompted by the government's failure to fully implement the December 2025 agreement reached after years of negotiations.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened a nationwide strike if the Nigerian government fails to address the outstanding issues affecting universities urgently.

ASUU president, Christopher Piwuna, a professor, disclosed this in a statement issued after an emergency meeting of the union's National Executive Council (NEC) on Thursday.

The union said its decision was prompted by the government's failure to fully implement the December 2025 agreement reached after years of negotiations.

The 2025 agreement followed prolonged disputes between ASUU and successive governments over the funding and conditions of service in Nigerian public universities.

The union said the non-implementation or "haphazard implementation" of the 2025 agreement, combined with the outstanding salaries and unremitted deductions, could trigger another industrial crisis in Nigeria's public universities.

The union said it may activate the suspended strike "without any further notice" if there is no satisfactory response to its demands.
