Three people have been killed following a clash between vigilantes and youths in the Kpakungu area of Minna, Niger State capital, the police have confirmed.

The incident occurred on Saturday night when a group of vigilantes reportedly mobilised to the area to arrest suspected hoodlums, resulting in the shooting of a man identified as Aliyu.

The shooting sparked protests by youths in the area on Sunday morning, during which two other people were reportedly killed, according to the Niger State Police Command.

The command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, who confirmed the incident to Daily Trust, said police patrol teams were immediately deployed to the area and restored normalcy.

He said efforts were ongoing to arrest the vigilante member allegedly responsible for the shooting.

“On 3rd October 2026 at about 10.30pm, a report received indicated that a group of vigilante men mobilised to Kpakungu area to arrest some miscreants and in the process, one of the vigilante members shot one Aliyu dead, which led to some protest within the area.

“Police patrol teams were mobilised to the location and normalcy was restored, while efforts to arrest the vigilante man are ongoing,” Abiodun said.

The police spokesperson, however, said the situation escalated in the early hours of Sunday when some suspected hoodlums blocked the Bida-Minna Road while protesting the killing.
