Guard arrested over alleged sexual assault of pupil

原文原文 / Original Text

The Cross River State Police Command has arrested a 22-year-old security guard over the alleged sexual assault of a five-year-old pupil of a nursery and primary school in Calabar.

The suspect, identified as Bright Bassey Elijah, was attached to the school as a security guard.

The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eitokpah Sunday Akata, said in a statement on Tuesday that the incident was reported to the command on September 28 by the proprietress of the school.

According to the statement, the suspect was allegedly caught taking the five-year-old pupil to an uncompleted building within the vicinity of the school, where the alleged assault occurred.

The suspect is currently in police custody, while preliminary investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The command said the suspect would be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation after the preliminary inquiry.

It said the matter was being treated with the seriousness it deserved because of the age of the alleged victim, adding that appropriate investigative and child-protection procedures would be followed in accordance with the law.

The command urged parents, guardians, school authorities and members of the public to remain vigilant and promptly report suspected cases of child abuse or exploitation to the police.
