Suspend State Creation For Now, Gov Lawal Tells FG

Governor Dauda Lawal of Zamfara State has urged the Federal Government to suspend the creation of additional states.

He said the priority should be to strengthen existing ones before embarking on further restructuring.

Lawal said the financial difficulties confronting many of Nigeria’s 36 states had made it necessary to reconsider whether creating more states would deliver the development and administrative benefits being sought by proponents.

The governor spoke in Gusau during an interaction with media executives as part of activities marking the 30th anniversary of Zamfara State.

Zamfara was created from the old Sokoto State in October 1996 by the military administration of the late General Sani Abacha, with Gusau as its capital.

The state has since developed its own administrative structure and economic identity, with agriculture and solid minerals among its major economic activities.

But while acknowledging the benefits of the creation, Lawal said the circumstances facing the country today were different from those of three decades ago.

“Having realised the financial challenges, even the states that have already been created now find it very difficult to function effectively because of finances,” he said.
