原文原文 / Original TextThe Akwa Ibom State Police Command has arrested a 34-year-old man, James John, aka “Kpoi,” over alleged illegal mining activities in Ibeno Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said Kpoi was identified as one of the principal suspects allegedly involved in illegal mining activities at Okorutip, Atia and Ndito Ekaiba coastal villages in the area.
In a statement issued on Tuesday in Uyo, the PPRO said other suspects fled the mining sites when police operatives arrived, while bags containing a mineral substance identified as titanium ore, commonly referred to as “black sand,” were recovered.
She said the operation was part of the command’s enforcement drive against illegal mining announced on September 27, 2026, under the caption, “Police Declare War on Illegal Mining in Akwa Ibom State.”
According to the statement, police operatives stormed the suspected illegal mining sites on September 28, 2026, at about 11am.
“During the operation, the operatives arrested one James John, a.k.a. ‘Kpoi,’ male, 34 years old, of Itak Ifaha Village, who was identified as one of the principal suspects allegedly involved in illegal mining activities within the area.
“Other persons found at the mining locations reportedly fled the scene upon sighting the Police operatives and are currently being traced as investigations continue.
“Items sighted and recovered at the suspected illegal mining locations include bags containing a mineral substance identified as titanium ore, commonly referred to as ‘black sand.’ The recovered materials have been secured and will be subjected to appropriate examination and verification as part of the ongoing investigation,” she stated.
